English for Pharmacy is a course for students with level of English B1 and above according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF). It is primarily aimed at students of Pharmacy at university level in Bulgaria but is also appropriate for trainee and practising pharmacists who need to use the language more effectively at work and want to refresh the language of their speciality.
The coursebook can also be used selectively as supplementary material by students of medicine, dental medicine, nursing, etc., who would like to extend their vocabulary and reinforce the grammar they know in English by working on texts and contexts directly related to pharmacy and pharmacology.
The textbook consists of 24 units organised around topics of immediate relevance and interest to pharmacy students and practitioners, and offers 60 to 90 contact hours of work. It contains a wide range of activities developing the receptive and
productive psycholinguistic skills and strategies: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The tasks allow students to enrich their vocabulary in English as well as recycle and consolidate grammar typical for pharmacy contexts. Along with the communication skills, the book caters for students’ academic skills as well, and special emphasis has been placed on developing and improving study skills.
Supplementary material is provided at the end for self-study and further revision of typical terms and patterns of medical discourse. The glossary allows for autonomous learning and helps students to develop both their accuracy and fluency in English.
The authors have a long experience in teaching English for Specific Purposes and ELT methodology and for a couple of years have piloted the coursebook with students of Pharmacy.
